Bridging Cultures through Craftsmanship

Founded by Kiyomi, a native of Saitama, Japan, Sashiko Design epitomizes the fusion of contemporary Australian design with traditional Japanese craftsmanship. After migrating to Australia in 2000 with her husband, Andrew, Kiyomi launched her brand at Hobart’s Salamanca Market. The brand’s evolution continued with the opening of a gallery workshop in the Salamanca Arts Centre in 2022, deepening its roots in the local arts community.

Kiyomi’s creations are a testament to cultural harmony, utilizing materials that bridge her Japanese heritage and new Australian influences. Her bags combine Japanese vintage kimono fabrics with durable denim, soft cotton, and leather, achieving a distinctive look that marries the elegance of Japanese tradition with the rugged spirit of Australian design.

The Artistic Process and Unique Creations

Designing for Kiyomi is an organic and intuitive process. She works without preliminary sketches, preferring instead to keep a clear vision in her mind, which she brings to life directly through her materials. This approach allows each design to evolve naturally, achieving a balance of form and function that resonates deeply with her artistic vision.

The use of diverse vintage kimonos ensures that each bag is not only visually striking but also uniquely individual. Seeing the appreciation on her customers’ faces inspires Kiyomi to continue her work, each bag not just serving as a practical accessory but as a story of personal and cultural fusion, designed to be cherished and shown off with pride.
